How to install a free synth plugin in FL Studio

Keeble Weil · 2026-10-22 · 5 min read

You downloaded a free synth, ran the installer, opened FL Studio… and it's not there. This happens to everyone. Here's exactly where plugins live and how to make FL Studio see them.

1. Install the plugin to the right folder

Most installers put the plugin in the standard folder automatically. If you got a zip with a .vst3 file instead, copy it here yourself:

SystemVST3 folder
macOS/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3
WindowsC:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3

On a Mac, AU versions (.component) go in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. FL Studio uses the VST3, Logic uses the AU.

Mac: "the installer can't be opened"

Plugins from small developers are often not notarized by Apple, so macOS blocks them the first time. Try to open the installer once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. On older macOS versions, right-click the installer and choose Open.

2. Make FL Studio scan for it

  1. Open FL Studio and go to Options → Manage plugins.
  2. Check that the VST3 folder above is in the list of search paths (it is by default).
  3. Click Find installed plugins and wait for the scan to finish.
  4. Find your synth in the list and tick the star next to it. That adds it to your favourites so it shows up in the plugin picker.

3. Load it into a channel

Click the + at the bottom of the Channel Rack (or right-click an empty channel → Insert) and pick your synth. Open the piano roll, draw a few notes, press play. Done.

It still doesn't show up

Want a synth that's easy from the first minute?

Keeble Weil is a free synth plugin built and tested in FL Studio. The installer puts the VST3 and AU in the right folders for you. Instead of learning every knob first, you type what you want ("dark trap bass with a short pluck") and it builds the sound. It also includes a drum machine that writes grooves from a sentence.
