AI synth plugins: how describing a sound actually works
"AI music" usually means a website that spits out a finished song. An AI synth plugin is something else entirely, and for producers it's far more useful. Here's the difference, and how to get good results from one.
Two very different kinds of "AI music tool"
| AI song generators | AI synth plugins | |
|---|---|---|
| Output | A finished audio file | Settings on a real synth |
| Who plays the notes | The AI | You |
| Can you edit it? | Barely | Every knob, forever |
| Who owns the music | Often unclear | You. It's your performance on your synth |
An AI synth plugin doesn't generate audio. It translates your words into parameters: which waveforms, how the filter is set, how fast the envelope opens, how much reverb. The synth then makes the sound in real time, exactly like any other plugin. So you stay the producer; the AI just saves you the menu diving.
What happens when you type a prompt
In Keeble Weil, when you type "dark cinematic drone with a slow swell":
- The sound designer (powered by Claude) reads your description and the synth's current settings.
- It picks values for the oscillators, filter, envelopes, arpeggiator and effects that match the words. "Dark" usually means a lower filter cutoff, "slow swell" means a long attack.
- The knobs move on screen to the new positions, so you can see what changed and learn from it.
- You play it. If it's not right, you say so ("brighter", "less reverb") and it adjusts the existing sound instead of starting over.
How to write prompts that work
Describe what you hear, not what you think the settings should be. Good prompts mix three things:
- The role: bass, lead, pad, pluck, keys, drone, FX.
- The character: warm, dark, glassy, gritty, airy, aggressive, lo-fi.
- The movement: slow swell, short and punchy, wobbling, opening up, pulsing to the beat.
Then refine in small steps. "Darker" or "more movement" works better than rewriting the whole prompt.
Is it cheating?
Presets have existed since the 1980s, and nobody calls using one cheating. An AI sound designer is basically a preset that's made for your exact idea, and one that shows you which knobs created it. Many producers find they learn synthesis faster this way, because they see the cause and effect every time.
